About Apple’s Security Foundations

Every once in a while it’s healthy to reinstall your system… I know, I know, it’s almost a heresy to say that, but that’s reality in the world where our systems are totally unverifiable. In fact I don’t even attempt to verify if my Mac laptop has been compromised in any way (most system files are not signed anyway). But sometimes, you got this feeling that something might be wrong and you decide to reinstall to start your (digital) life all over again :)

So, every time I (re)install a Mac-based system, I end up cursing horribly at Apple’s architects. Why? Because in the Apple World they seem to totally ignore the concept of files integrity, to such extent that it’s virtually impossible to get any assurance that the programs I install are in any way authentic (i.e. not tampered by some 3rd party, e.g. by somebody controlling my Internet connection).

Take any Apple installer package, e.g. Thunderbird. In most cases an installer package on Mac is a .dmg file, that represents an installation disk image. Now, when you open such a file under Mac, the OS will never display any information about if this file is somehow signed (e.g. by who) or not. In fact, I’m pretty sure it’s never signed. What you end up with, is a .dmg file that you just downloaded over plaintext HTTP and you have absolutely no way of verifying if it is the original file the vendor really published. And you’re just about to grant admin privileges to the installer program that is inside this file — after all it’s an installer, so must got root privileges, right (well, not quite maybe)? Beautiful…

Interestingly, this very same Thunderbird installer, but for Windows, is correctly signed, and Windows, correctly, displays that information (together with the ability to examine the certificate) and allows the user to make a choice of whether to allow it to run or not.

Windows 7 Upgrade Methods

Neowin covered this back in early January, but with all the other Windows 7 news from CES that was coming out at the time, it seems to have been overlooked by other outlets. Now it seems to be making its way around the Internet again today. A document has leaked out that details the upgrade plans for users who purchase PC’s with Vista this summer. According to the document obtained by Tech Arp titled ” The Microsoft Windows 7 Upgrade Program Rev 2.1″ states that computers purchased after July 1st will be eligible to upgrade to Windows 7 free of charge.

The plan will follow in a similar path the Windows XP and Vista transition occurred. The idea behind the plan is to not prohibit people from purchasing computers as they wait for Windows 7 to be launched.

“Upgrades will be tier-for-tier, with Vista Home Premium users getting to switch up to Windows 7 Home Premium, Vista Business to Windows 7 Professional, and Vista Ultimate users getting an upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate. Additionally, 32-bit to 64-bit upgrades will not be allowed — but folks using the 32-bit version will get to perform a clean install of the 64-bit version. Lastly, a system that has a valid Vista license but is running XP under the downgrade scheme will be allowed to perform a fresh install of Windows 7.”

If you thinking of purchasing a new PC and can hold off until July it may be worth your while. While this isn’t an official announcement it seems that it’s pretty close to what the final plan will be.

Next Iphone Software leakout

The unveiling of the next iPhone is widely expected to come a week from today, but details of this model have been leaking out for months. The latest of these is a set of screenshots allegedly showing off some of the new features.

iPhone Digital CompassThese images first appeared in a Chinese-language forum, and have since been removed. As often happens with “spy” shots they are blurry, but these are good enough to reveal a bit about the next-generation smartphone from Apple.

It has been rumored for some time that the upcoming iPhone will have a digital compass, and one of the leaked images goes a long way toward confirming this (see image at left).

iPhone Voice RecorderApple has promised to add voice memos to the the iPhone’s feature list, and the screen for handling this is supposedly among the leaked shots.

More Video News
Support for MMS is another feature that Apple has confirmed, but support for video recording is still at the rumor stage. Still, one of the leaked images shows that users will be able to attach video to a MMS message.

According to earlier reports, the built-in camera will allow users to record and edit videos, and then share these with friends and family.

What to Expect in the Next iPhone
According to information that has leaked out of Apple, the third-generation iPhone will be an evolutionary rather than a revolutionary model. Its feature set will be improved, but not dramatically so.

iPhone MMS ScreenThis device will allegedly have basically the same shape and size as the current model, and also the same screen. According to one source this may be a OLED display, though.

According to unconfirmed reports, the next iPhone will be based on a 600 MHz processor, have 256 MB of RAM, and a 3.2 MPx camera. There will be two versions: the 16 GB one is expected to sell for $200, while the 32 GB one will cost $300.

Many of the enhancements in this device will come from its new system software, and will also be available to the current model. This includes support for cut, copy, and paste, MMS. Stereo Bluetooth, as well as peer-to-peer gaming.

In addition, the next-generation iPhone will almost certainly support the 7.2 Mbps 3G network that AT&T is currently putting into place, doubling its download speed when connected to a cellular-wireless network.

Ten Steps To Secure Your PC

While Windows Vista may be Microsoft Corp.’s most secure operating system ever, it’s far from completely secure. In its fresh-from-the-box configuration, Vista still leaves a chance for your personal data to leak out to the Web through Windows Firewall or for some nefarious bot to tweak your browser settings without your knowledge.

But by making a few judicious changes using the security tools within Windows Vista — and in some cases by adding a few pieces of free software — you can lock down your operating system like a pro.
1. Use Windows Security Center as a starting point

For a quick overview of your security settings, the Windows Security Center is where you’ll find the status of your system firewall, auto update, malware protection and other security settings. Click Start, Control Panel, Security Center, or you can simply click the shield icon in the task tray. If you see any red or yellow, you are not fully protected.

For example, if you have not yet installed an antivirus product on your machine, or if your current antivirus product is out of date, the malware section of the Security Center should be yellow. Windows does not offer a built-in antivirus utility, so you’ll want to install your own. For free antivirus, I recommend AVG Anti-Virus 8.
2. Use Windows Defender as a diagnostic tool

The malware section of Windows Vista also protects against spyware using Windows Defender. The antispyware protection in your antivirus program usually trumps the protection Microsoft provides, but there are several good reasons to keep Windows Defender enabled. One is that every antispyware program uses a different definition of what is and is not spyware, so redundant protection can actually offer some benefit.

Another reason to keep Windows Defender enabled: diagnostics. Click Tools, and choose Software Explorer from the resulting pane. You can display lists of applications from several categories such as Currently Running Programs, Network Connected Programs and Winsock Service Providers, but Start-up Programs is perhaps the most useful. Click on any name in the left window, and full details will appear in the right pane. By highlighting, you can remove, disable or enable any of the programs listed.
3. Disable the start-up menu

Windows Vista keeps track of all the documents and programs you launch in the start-up menu. This can be convenient for some users, but it can also compromise your privacy if you share a computer within an office or household. Fortunately, Windows Vista provides an easy way to tweak this setting. To protect your privacy, follow these steps:

* Right-click on the task bar and select “Properties.”
* Click on the Start Menu tab.
* Uncheck “Store and display a list of recently opened files.”
* Uncheck “Store and display a list of recently opened programs.”
* Click “OK.”

4. Get two-way firewall protection

No desktop should be without a personal firewall, but even if the Security Center says you’re protected, you may not be. The Windows Firewall within Vista blocks all incoming traffic that might be malicious or suspicious — and that’s good. But outbound protection is not enabled by default. That’s a dangerous situation if some new malicious software finds its way onto your PC.

Microsoft did include the tools for Windows Vista to have a true two-way firewall, but finding the setting is a little complicated. (Hint: Don’t go looking the Windows Firewall settings dialog box.

To get two-way firewall protection in Windows Vista, do the following:

* Click on the Start button; in the search space, type “wf.msc” and press Enter.
* Click on the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security icon. This management interface displays the inbound and outbound rules.
* Click on Windows Firewalls Properties. You should now see a dialog box with several tabs.
* For each profile — Domain, Private and Public — change the setting to Block, and then click OK.

Even if you do this tweak, I recommend adding a more robust third-party firewall. I suggest either Comodo Firewall Pro or ZoneAlarm, both of which are free and fare very well in independent firewall testing.
5. Lock out unwanted guests

If you share your computer with others — and even if you don’t — Windows Vista includes a neat way to keep unwanted guests from guessing your systems administrator password. When you set up users and declare one user as administrator with full privileges, Windows Vista allows outsiders unlimited guesses at the password you chose. Here’s how to limit the guesses.

* Click Start, then type “Local Security Policy.”
* Click Account Lockout Policy.
* Choose Account Lockout Threshold.
* At the prompt, enter the number of invalid log-ins you’ll accept (say, three).
* Click OK and close.

6. Now audit your attackers

With the Account Lockout policy in place, you can now enable auditing to see any account attacks. To turn on auditing for failed log-on events, do the following:

* Click the Start button, type “secpol.msc,” and click the secpol icon.
* Click on Local Policies and then Audit Policy.
* Right-click on “Audit account log-on events policy,” and select Properties.
* Check the Failure box, and click OK.
* Right-click on “Audit log-on events policy” and select Properties.
* Check the Failure box and click OK.
* Close the Local Security Policy window.

You can then use the Event Viewer (by running eventvwr.msc) to view the logs under Windows Logs and Security.
7. Secure your Internet Explorer settings

The Windows Security Center will also report whether your Internet Explorer 7 (or IE 8) security settings are at their recommended levels. If the screen shows this section as red, you can adjust the settings within the browser itself.

* Within Internet Explorer, click Tools in the menu bar.
* From the drop-down menu, click Internet Options.
* Choose the Security tab.
* Within the Security tab, click Custom Level.

Here you’ll see a window with all the security options for the browser. If any are below the recommended level (if, say, some malware reconfigured your browser settings), these options will be highlighted in red.

To change an individual setting, click the appropriate radio button. To reset them all, use the button near the bottom of the tab. You can also change the overall security setting for Internet Explorer from the default Medium-High setting to the recommended High or Medium, if you wish. Click OK to save and close.
8. Use OpenDNS

Domain Name System (DNS) servers act as a phone book. When you type “pcworld.com” in the address bar, for instance, your browser sends that common-name request to your Internet service provider’s DNS servers to be converted into a series of numbers, or an IP address.

Lately, DNS servers have come under attack, with criminals seeking to redirect common DNS preferences to servers that they control. One way to stop such abuse is to use OpenDNS.

Go to Start, Control Panel, Network and Internet, and then click Network and Sharing Center. Under the tasks listed on the left, click Manage Network Connections. In the Manage Network Connections window, do the following:

* Right-click on the icon representing your network card.
* Click Properties.
* Click Internet Protocol Version 4.
* Click the Properties button.
* Select the Use the following DNS server addresses radio button.
* Type in a primary address of 208.67.222.222.
* Type in a secondary address of 208.67.220.220.
* Click OK.

9. Live with User Account Control

One area where some people might want to see the Windows Security Center turn red is User Account Control (UAC), perhaps the most controversial security feature within Windows Vista. Designed to keep rogue remote software from automatically installing (among other things), UAC has a tendency to thwart legitimate software installations by interrupting the process several times with useless messages.

In Windows 7, you’ll be able to set UAC to the level you want. Until then, you do have some options. One is to disable UAC. I would caution against that, since UAC is meant to warn you of potential danger.

Instead, install TweakUAC, a free utility that enables you to turn UAC on or off as well as provides an intermediate “quiet” mode that keeps UAC on but suppresses administration-elevation prompts. With TweakUAC in quiet mode, UAC will appear to be off to those running as administrator accounts, while people with standard user accounts will still be prompted.
10. Check your work

Now that you’ve tweaked Windows Vista, you can keep tabs on your system’s security with the System Health Report. This diagnostic tool takes input from the Performance and Reliability Monitor and turns it into an information-packed report that can spotlight potential security problems.

* Open Control Panel.
* Click System.
* In the Tasks list, click Performance (near the bottom).
* In the resulting Tasks list, click Advanced tools (near the top).
* Click the last item on the resulting list — “Generate a system health report.”

The report will list any missing drivers that might be causing error codes, tell you whether your antivirus protection is installed and declare whether UAC is turned on. You may want to run this report once a month just to make sure everything’s still good.

Windows 7 Update Addresses App Compatibility

Microsoft released a minor update this week for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 that addresses compatibility issues for some applications.

It’s the first update for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 since the availability of the release-to-manufacturing (RTM) versions of the operating systems. The update will either improve the functioning of a particular application or block it from running.

The update implements a “hard block” to prevent an application from running or a “soft block” to just warn the user that the application running is incompatible with the OS.

Microsoft’s Knowledge Base article explains that the update is designed to address problems typically encountered when running legacy games or other applications on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. However, the article lists a fair amount of security software, including Trend Micro Internet Security, PGP Desktop and Trend Micro VirusBuster 2008. Even Window Live Photo Gallery made the list.

The update package can be downloaded from the Microsoft Download Center in x86 and x64 versions for Windows 7. It’s available in x64 and Itanium versions for Windows Server 2008 R2. The update requires a restart to take effect.

Users not helped by Microsoft’s update can try to run incompatible applications by using Windows 7’s desktop virtualization features. Microsoft recommends Windows 7’s XP Mode desktop virtualization feature for small-to-medium organizations. For larger organizations requiring centralized management control over multiple PCs, Microsoft instead recommends using Microsoft Enterprise Desktop Virtualization (MED-V). MED-V is a component in the Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack, available via Software Assurance licensing.

MED-V allows users to run XP or Windows 2000 virtual desktops in Vista. However, Microsoft plans to add support for Windows 7 hosts when MED-V 1.0 Service Pack 1 is released in the first quarter of next year, according to a Microsoft blog. Oddly, the blog explains that “as it stands today, there is no support for Windows 7 or Windows Vista guests expected any time soon” in MED-V.

MED-V doesn’t require special hardware virtualization capabilities to run, the blog noted. In contrast, users of XP Mode have to first check that the PC uses processors with built-in virtualization capabilities, such as Intel VT and AMD-V technologies.

For those facing daunting application compatibility issues and willing to pay for support, Microsoft recently rolled out a new support line for the purpose. The company also provides a free downloadable Application Compatibility Toolkit to help diagnose such problems. Microsoft partner-based support is available through the Windows 7 Application Compatibility Factory Program, described here.

Another more general resource is Microsoft’s Springboard video panel discussions on application compatibility issues in Windows 7. Microsoft Technical Fellow Mark Russinovich hosted a two-part series on the topic. Part 1 discusses mitigation techniques, while Part 2 looks at virtualization solutions when those initial techniques can’t be used.

Datarock – Computer Camp Love

Datarock – Computer Camp Love

You can find online bargains, including coupons for discounts, when you shop online for both Apple Computers and Hewlett Packard computers. Both of these computer companies are highly revered in the industry. While some people prefer to use a PC and others prefer a Mac, both of these computer companies offer stellar computers with a fine reputation.

Winning the Popularity Polls

Many people prefer using Apple Computers because they are very user friendly. Those who work with graphic design and are looking for the most user friendly computer often choose a Mac over a PC. There are several different systems that you can use when you are using a computer and a Mac and a PC are two of the most commonly used computer systems today. The Mac computers, made by Apple, cost a bit more but are very slim, easy to use and feature state of the art components.

This is not to say that the Hewlett Packard computers are none the worse for the wear. In fact, Hewlett Packard is one of the top brands in the PC industry. They are the makers of Compaq, another name that you can trust when it comes to PC computers. Most people, when searching for a PC, prefer to look for the Hewlett Packard name. They have filled the slot that was once dominated by IBM.

Exchanging Coupons for Computers

Buying either the Hewlett Packard computers or the Mac computers entails you going online or to a retail store to make your purchase. If you are looking for a computer coupon to get a discount on a computer, you may want to do a search online for the coupon. When you order a computer online at the Hewlett Packard site or Apple site, you can put in a coupon code to get a discount on your purchase. If you have a printed coupon, you can often use the code on the coupon to get the discount right online.

Although you can get a Hewlett Packard computer at virtually any store that sells computer, including online vendors, you can only get an Apple Computer at an Apple retailer. There are stores that sell only Mac computers that are located in off sites, such as malls, as well as online. You have more choices when it comes to finding competitive prices for a Hewlett Packard computer than you do with an Apple computer as there are fewer venues that sell the Macs.

Many people prefer the PC computers offered by Hewlett Packard over the Mac computers offered by Apple because there are more people working on these computers and more software programs that are compatible with the PC computers. Online, you will find that many downloads are only compatible for those working on a PC. However, because the Macs are so easy to use, as well as have a reputation for being reliable and lightweight, they are a formidable competitor of the PC. Whether you choose a PC from Hewlett Packard or a Mac from Apple, you should look for coupons that will enable you to save money when you are purchasing a brand new computer.

New Teclast T58 – first Android PMP?

RK2808 master using dual-core technology inside: ARM9 RISC processor + DSP digital signal processor core, the speed is more assured specifically for the MID, GPS, wireless connectivity equipment design. Also supports H.264, RMVB, MPEG-4, AVS, WMV9 video encoding format, the maximum supported video resolution of 1280 * 720, I believe we have already been learned.

RK2808 also supports 720P high-definition video output function, you can connect high-definition LCD TV broadcast video. But so far, we do not know whether the T58 will be equipped with video output ports.

In addition, RK2808 also supports USB OTG functionality, which means that T58 has the power to direct-attached U disk or removable hard disk, live inside the high-definition video, read the paper inside operation, I believe that this feature combined with the Android smartphone operating system, performance will be even more eye-catching.

In addition to the master chip, the screen can confirm that T58 will use full-screen touch-screen technology, but the screen size and the size is still unsolved mysteries. As a result of Google Android smartphone operating system, the initial pre-installed software is more interesting to those questions.

With regard to Taiwan Power Company T58, at present there is so much information leak out, more news we can stroll over to the Taiwan Power Company forum, perhaps there will be more gains:

Motorola Morrison specs purportedly leak out

Hopefully Motorola’s cooking up a super-special custom UI for the Android-powered Morrison, considering the purported spec list that just leaked out is looking pretty average — Moto’s newest slider will apparently sport the same 528MHz Qualcomm processor with 256MB of RAM, or basically the same setup as the HTC G1, myTouch, and Hero. Yeah, we know that is supposed to be a lower-end set, but isn’t it high duration we saw some fundamentally different Android hardware?

Rumour points to possible early 2010 Apple Tablet release date

After the Wall Street Journal reported earlier last month that Steve Jobs is reportedly putting all his focus on the Apple Tablet, it appears that we will in fact see the device sometime in early 2010 according to an article on Taiwanese site Taiwan Economic News.
According to the site, the device will feature a 9.6-inch screen, finger-touch function and built-in HSPDA (high speed download packet access) module, a P.A. SEMI processor chip and a longer lasting battery pack with the price expected to be in the $799 to $999 bracket.
The report also goes on to state where many of the major parts for the device will come from, with the DynaPack International Technology Corp.reportedly to provide 300,000 battery packs whilst Wanshih Electronic Co. Ltd will manufacture approximately 70 per cent of the Tablets mini coaxial cables. Layers Scientific-Technics Co., Ltd. will provide the power chokes, and Wintek Corp. will play the all important role of providing the touchscreens.
It should be noted that P.A. SEMI, the chipmaker for most Apple products, was recently bought out by Apple, and it’s thought that the company has been restructured into two teams – one for the iPhone/iPod Touch and one for the Tablet.

Configuring a newly purchased system

Configuring a newly installed or purchased computer system usually involves installing software programs that are needed for work, entertainment or maintenance. Only a few users go the extra mile and create a custom setup CD that will install the needed software programs automatically. Most uses will search the web, download programs one by one and install them on the computer system.

That’s usually not a very pleasant thing to do as it takes lots of time to download and install all these programs. The Smart Installer Pack tries to reduce the time it takes to install popular software by providing an interface to download and install dozens of popular software programs.

The program will display a full screen interface after installation that can be used to select some or all of the included software programs which will then be automatically downloaded and installed (one after the other). Included are programs like Firefox, Opera, Google Chrome, Filezilla FTP Server, Digsby, Skype, RocketDock, Picasa and iTunes among dozens of additional programs.

The latest version of the selected software programs will be downloaded according to the developer’s of Smart Installer Pack. One limitation that is currently in place is that the software programs are listed in groups of eight on individual pages and that it is only possible to download software from one page at a time meaning it is not possible to go through all pages to select all software that should be downloaded and installed.

It is also a good idea to check the version of the programs downloaded with the latest version on the developer’s website (or through an existing update function in the software) to make sure the latest version has indeed been installed.

Smart Installer Pack would be more user friendly if all software programs would be listed on one page to streamline the process and make it more comfortable to the user.

What’s the latest in Computer Technology?

Have you ever seen the inside of your computer? By any chance, if you have peeked while the technician or vendor was installing any of the components, then you might have thought of it as a machine of threats. But getting acquainted gradually with various components of a computer system will make things quite easier. Present computers are a setup of approximately eight different parts, while the advanced versions may have additional number of components. Even at the beginner’s level, you must have a basic knowledge about these fundamental components of your system. So let us get started with your system.

Foremost is the supply of power. It is very important as without it, the electricity will not be supplied to all the other components of your system. It is generally a rectangle shaped compartment and is mainly placed in a corner of your system. To make sure of this component, search the path of the power cable and see where the plug is in the rear of your system. And there it is. The supply of power is mainly calculated in watts with an increment of 50 watts (500,550,600 etc).

Then there is the Motherboard. Every individual component of your system is connected to this part, but still it must not be considered as the brain of the system. It does embrace the brain and is responsible for the proper functioning of the brain with every other peripheral of the computer.

Third very vital part is the Central Processing Unit (CPU) and this is known as the brain of your machine. Nothing can happen if this component goes missing. Every major to minor calculation is processed inside this part. The activation, control and proper operation of every other unit in co-ordination with each other is also the responsibility of CPU. Lesser the time taken by CPU to calculate and deliver the accurate answers, better and quicker will be the performance of your machine. The measurement is in Gigahertz (Ghz) and CPUs faster than 3.8 Ghz are now available.

Random Access Memory (RAM) is at the fourth place. It is used as a temporary storage for the work being done on the system. RAM is of different types with varying speeds, but it must be ensured that RAM matches the configuration of the motherboard for its effective operation.

Hard drive is the fifth component which is a permanent storage for all your data. Data can be the operating system (required), various softwares, games, audio and video files etc. with the passage of time, the capacity of hard drive has increased tremendously from 20 MB to more than 500 GB. This enables you to store libraries of games, videos, pictures, applications, documents etc. Of course you can choose the one suiting your requirements.

Cooling fan comes at the sixth place. Generally the system is loaded with a single cooling fan but it can have more than one fan too. Its working is similar to that of a coolant in the car. It is responsible to remove the heat that is generated by your system’s other components so that nothing gets broken because of overheating. No wonders the fan does make noise but it must be tolerated as cooling fan helps preventing damage to delicate parts.

Seventh component is actually a blend of multiple devices. These include CD-DVD Drives, Floppy Drive and other devices used for taking backups (External Hard drives etc).
